A little clean-living rabbit hole from my candle studio

Dear Reader,

I was making a quick batch of altar candles this morning to fill an order when I got a call from David at Open to Source Sensors.

He makes harmonium microphones — which is very exciting in my world. 😏🎶

As we got talking, I mentioned that I make my candles in small batches and keep them as clean and simple as possible. That led us into a conversation about synthetic fragrance oils, indoor air quality, headaches, and how much fragrance we’ve all become accustomed to living around every day.

And down the rabbit hole I went.

It got me thinking about something I notice constantly at events: almost everyone picks up a candle and immediately smells it.

We’ve been trained to expect candles to “smell good.”

Mine don’t really do that.

They have a naturally light, pleasant scent from the soy and coconut waxes themselves, but I don’t add synthetic fragrance oils — or even essential oils — to them.

My candles are made with just four simple ingredients: soy wax, coconut wax, a hemp wick, and beeswax coating the wick.

The crystals, symbolism, and intention do the energetic work.

And when I do want to work with scent, I keep that separate through true aromatherapy using high-quality organic essential oils in my aura sprays and anointing oils.

That distinction got me thinking about what I jokingly call “Franken-therapy” vs. aromatherapy.

One is engineered to be powerful, persistent, and everywhere.

The other is something I choose consciously and use with purpose.

I wrote a new blog post about all of this — really less about fear and more about my clean-living philosophy:

If something provides no biological necessity, continually increases my chemical exposure, gives me headaches, contributes to indoor air pollution, and can easily be avoided… why would I saturate my home with it while we wait decades for perfect evidence that it isn't healthy for me or my family?

For me, clean living isn’t about being afraid of everything.

It’s about asking, “Does this really need to be here?”

And whenever possible, choosing less.

With love,
Mindy

P.S. There is something wonderfully radical about a candle that simply gets to be a candle. ✨
